Itálica Archaeological Complex
On December 13, 1912, a Royal Order declared the Ruins of Itálica a National Monument (Gaceta de Madrid, No. 364, of December 29, 1912). It was a measure of protection, as efficient as the circumstances allowed, for which the State was based on this declaration guaranteeing the conservation of the monument, and whose scope, that of protection, can be assessed knowing the situation of defenselessness that the site had suffered for centuries until that moment.
The text of that brief Royal Order was clear in this regard, since it explained that at the proposal of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando was declared a National Monument to the Ruins of Itálica "freeing them from all danger and from all harmful contingencies in the present, as from all risks in the future, in attention to the enduring lesson that they entail and to the benefits that with their teachings provide".
